A global competition with editions in over 100 cities, the 48 Hour Film Project challenges teams to create a film, from writing to shooting to post-production, in 48 hours. After taking place throughout this year in cities around the world, the Shanghai installment returns next weekend.

The point of the tight deadline is to give industry professionals and amateur filmmakers a relatively equal playing field. In order to ensure that nobody starts working on their film early, all the contestants must attend a kickoff event, which goes down on Friday, Nov 3 at 6pm at Cambio Coffee's Shaanxi Nan Lu location.

At this meeting, teams pick their genre out of a hat (genres can be anything from romance to horror to a fish out of water story), and are then assigned three 'elements': a prop, a character, and a line of dialogue, which all must appear in their film. These vary from city to city, but every team in any given city all must feature the same three elements in their film. Interested filmmakers who don't have a team can also attend the kickoff event to join up with an existing team.

As soon as the event is over, the filmmaking period begins, and teams must pass in their completed short film 48 hours later, by 6.30pm on Sunday, Nov 5 at the same Cambio Coffee. An after-party goes down immediately following.

The finished films will then be screened a week later, on Sunday Nov 12 at Central Studios, where a winner will be chosen. Last year’s winning film, a surreal short called The Park (pictured at top, watch it here), went on to compete with winners from other cities in the worldwide Filmapalooza contest, and the same will be true of this year’s Shanghai winner. The winner of Filmapalooza then goes on to screen their film at the Cannes Short Film Corner.

Interested filmmakers can sign their team up here.
